Getting started
Install it, create your key, and confirm your mailbox. About ten minutes, once.
1. Pick the right one
Gmail or Outlook on the web
Use the browser plugin. Banners appear on your messages by themselves.
Anything else
Use the desktop application. It works with every mail program, and can protect
everything you send automatically.
They share the same identity, so you can use both. Downloads →
2. Create your key
Enter your e-mail address and choose a passphrase. Your key is created on your own computer and
never leaves it. There is no account to sign up for.
You are then shown a recovery phrase. Write it on paper.
This phrase is the only way to restore your key on another device or after clearing your browser.
Anyone who has it can read your protected mail, and nobody — including us — can recover it
for you. That is the direct cost of a system where no company holds your keys.
3. Confirm your mailbox
Until you do this, people who receive your mail see “signed, but the address is
unconfirmed”. Confirming turns that into Verified sender.
Press E-mail me a code, then paste the code back. It lasts six months, then you repeat
it — control of a mailbox is not permanent, so neither is the proof.
4. That is it
Read your mail as normal. Messages you open get a banner. To protect what you send, either press
a button when you write, or set up
automatic protection so you never think about it again.
