Installing
There are three ways in. You only need one, and which one depends on how you read your mail.
Which one do I want?
| If you read mail in… | Choose | Because |
| Outlook, Thunderbird or Apple Mail on a computer | Desktop application | Works with any mail program, and can protect everything you send automatically |
| Gmail or Outlook in a browser tab | Browser plugin | Banners appear on the page itself |
| Outlook, and your organisation manages add-ins | Outlook add-in | Installs centrally, no download per person |
You can use more than one — they share nothing except your recovery phrase, which you can
enter on each device.
The desktop application
One file. There is no installer and nothing is added to your system.
- Download the file for your computer from the downloads section.
- Open it. A window appears; it also runs quietly in the background afterwards.
- Choose a passphrase. This protects the settings stored on this computer.
- Write down the twelve-word recovery phrase it shows you. See
your recovery phrase — this is the one step you cannot redo later.
- Enter your e-mail address and confirm your mailbox when the code arrives.
Your computer will warn you. On Windows: "Windows protected your PC" —
choose More info, then Run anyway. On macOS: right-click the file and
choose Open the first time.
This happens because the files are not yet signed with a paid publisher certificate. It
is a real warning about a real gap, and you are right to be cautious about it: only install
software from a source you have reason to trust.
The browser plugin
Chrome and Edge, for Gmail and Outlook on the web. It is not in the Chrome Web Store yet,
so it installs manually.
- Download protectmymail-extension.zip and unpack it to a folder you will keep.
Deleting that folder removes the plugin.
- Open chrome://extensions (or edge://extensions).
- Turn on Developer mode, top right.
- Click Load unpacked and select the folder.
- Click the plugin icon and either create a key or enter a recovery phrase you already have.
Open Gmail. Banners appear on messages by themselves, and two buttons appear when you
write one.
The Outlook add-in
This one is not downloaded — Outlook fetches it from a web address.
- In Outlook, open Get Add-ins → My add-ins →
Add a custom add-in → Add from URL.
- Enter
https://anuumail.com/manifest.xml.
- A ProtectMyMail button appears when you read and when you write a message.
Not yet verified on a live tenant. The add-in passes Microsoft's manifest
validation and works against a test setup, but it has not been run inside a real Microsoft
365 organisation. Treat it as a preview. The Outlook guide
says what is and is not known to work.
Confirming your mailbox
All three ask you to do this once. A short code is mailed to your address; you paste it
back. That is what turns Signed into Verified sender for everyone who
receives your mail. Until you do it, your mail is still protected against alteration — it
just cannot prove the address is yours.
Removing it
- Desktop: quit it and delete the file. Its settings live in your user
folder under ProtectMyMail and can be deleted too.
- Browser: remove it on the extensions page, or delete the folder.
- Outlook: remove it under My add-ins.
Nothing you have already sent changes. Signatures already published stay valid; they are
statements about messages, not a subscription.
Next: everyday use.
